Relapsing polychondritis.

چکیده
Relapsing polychondritis, an uncommon, chronic, multisystem disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of inflammation of cartilaginous tissues, can be life-threatening, debilitating, and difficult to diagnose. This review is based on the authors' experience with 36 patients with relapsing polychondritis who were followed from 1980 to 1997, 30 patients located elsewhere who completed a detailed questionnaire and interview, and a perusal of English-language textbooks and papers located by a systematic search of the MEDLINE database. Relapsing polychondritis can present in a highly ambiguous fashion; therefore, in the authors' series, the mean delay from the time medical attention was sought because of symptom onset until diagnosis was 2.9 years. Although prednisone was the main form of treatment, methotrexate seemed to be of additional value. Survival was much more favorable than previously thought. Greater awareness of relapsing polychondritis would probably lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes.

OBJECTIVE Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease characterized by cartilage inflammation. Our aim was to estimate the incidence, prevalence and mortality of relapsing polychondritis and describe the clinical features of relapsing polychondritis in a large population. METHODS All participants diagnosed with relapsing polychondritis were sampled from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink....
متن کاملRelapsing polychondritis: a rare etiology of dysphonia and novel approach to treatment.
Relapsing polychondritis affects the airway in half of all diagnosed patients. The traditional approach to the treatment of relapsing polychondritis in all sites is oral steroids and other immune-modulating drugs. We present a case of laryngeal relapsing polychondritis treated with local injections of steroid in the face of oral therapy failure. The novel approach is discussed and the disease p...
متن کاملUncommon CT findings in relapsing polychondritis.
Relapsing polychondritis is a rare inflammatory disorder of cartilage with well-established clinical features and imaging characteristics. Abnormal calcification and erosion of cartilaginous structures are the traditional radiographic findings. As with any disease, aberrancies of the expected clinical presentation may lead to a delayed (or missed) diagnosis. We discuss a rare case of relapsing ...

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare multisystem disease. We describe the presentation and treatment of a patient with relapsing polychondritis and review the literature. This patient had involvement of the tracheobronchial tree requiring insertion of metallic stents.
متن کاملCartilage-specific autoimmunity in animal models and clinical aspects in patients – focus on relapsing polychondritis
Relapsing polychondritis is an autoimmune disease in which an inappropriate immune response destroys cartilage. Cartilage of the ears, larynx and nose rather than spine and joint cartilage is affected by a chronic relapsing and erosive inflammation. Several animal models for relapsing polychondritis have been published in which immunization with various cartilage proteins induces a variety of c...
متن کاملRelapsing Polychondritis Following Alopecia Areata
A case of alopecia areata followed by relapsing polychondritis is presented. Similar cases from the literature are reviewed and speculation about the relationship of these diseases is offered. Although the occurrence of these diseases together could be coincidental, an association seems immunologically plausible. Thus, relapsing polychondritis might be an unusual systemic manifestation of alope...
